This weekend, the Germans win WWII as the Hollywood Bowl re-stages one of Broadway's biggest shows of all time, The Producers: A New Mel Brooks Musical, with the help of creators Brooks and Thomas Meehan, and director-choreographer Susan Stroman. The story of a schlock Broadway producer and his spineless schnook of an accountant who scheme their way into the poor house thanks to a musical called Springtime for Hitler won a record 12 Tony awards. And while stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick were the show's power duo, Gary Beach — as flamboyant theater director Roger De Bris, also a Tony winner — and Roger Bart — as his even more flamboyant, lisping assistant Carmen Ghia — portrayed The Producers' more memorable characters. (No one can play that “wacky Hun” and “hotsy-totsy Nazi” better than Beach, David Hasselhoff in Vegas notwithstanding.) Beach and Bart appeared together in the musical's 2003 L.A. run and went on to star in the 2005 film version. The two will reunite for these performances, joining Richard Kind (also of the stage and film incarnations) as Max Bialystock; Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Leo Bloom; Dane Cook as playwright Franz Liebkind; and Rebecca Romijn as leggy blonde love interest Ulla. Hollywood Bowl, 2301 N. Highland Ave.; Fri.-Sat., July 27-28, 8 p.m.; Sun., July 29, 7:30 p.m.; $11-$162. (323) 850-2000, hollywoodbowl.com.
