For all of the tens of you out there wondering who is the skinny guy at the Saturday Silver Lake farmer's market selling all those gorgeous planting herbs (3 for 5$!) we have the answer. His name is Brandon Dimperio, he is 27 years of age and he has worked in the kitchens of Bastide and Patina. He found he preferred working outside for the “health benefits,” and by that he means sunshine, not Blue Cross. He lives in Burbank, and it is there, on ¾ of an acre, that he grows his dill, basil, mint, rue and tomatoes.

All for your herb-buying convenience, he gets up at 6 am every morning to sow seeds, plant, transplant, dry and make baskets. From February to October you can find him in Silver Lake on Saturday and in Studio City on Sunday. Here is his herb tip of the day: when planting these babies, it is best to use regular old soil without any fussing. If you feed and mulch your soil when planting, your efforts will only burn out your herbs. You may feed your herbs, but only after two or three weeks in the ground or pot. You're welcome, America!

Silver Lake farmers market: 3700 Sunset Blvd, Silver Lake, (323) 661-7771. Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
