Meet Yogesh Darji: The Builder Making AI Infrastructure Work for Everyone

Engineer and founder Yogesh Darji arrived in the U.S. with just a few dollars in his pocket and a dream, and has spent his storied career teaching programming, mentoring up and comers, and removing the common barriers that developers face, enabling them to create better applications and services.

This focus has led him to diverse roles across startups, major tech companies, and competitive environments like hackathons, always with an eye on helping others solve problems more effectively. Today, that same thinking drives his latest venture, Lumino Labs, a platform which equips developers with the infrastructure to build and scale AI-native applications — without relying on expensive hardware.

Yogesh’s Early Path to Tech

Growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Mumbai, Yogesh’s earliest experiences with tech weren’t in a classroom — they came from watching his neighbor turn their garage into a hardware workshop. At just six years old, he was already curious about motherboards and RAM chips — long before he understood what they actually did.

That early curiosity stuck. Years later, he moved to the U.S. to pursue a Master’s in Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas. With limited financial aid, he supported himself by tutoring students in programming. “I arrived in the U.S. with just $200 and an education loan, but I knew exactly why I was here: to build,” he recalls. “Every challenge I faced early on only strengthened my conviction that I wanted to create meaningful technology — not just use it.”

Engaging with the Tech Community Through Hackathons

After graduating, Yogesh didn’t take the traditional path into corporate tech. Instead, he immersed himself in high-pressure, competitive hackathons, participating in over 20 global events — including:

These events pushed him to think creatively and adapt in real-time, as he often had to work under tight deadlines, with unfamiliar teammates, and using whatever tools were available. As he continued to spend time in these environments, hackathons became his training ground — not just for writing code fast, but for learning how to collaborate, prototype quickly, and design ideas with users in mind.

After a while, he became a mentor and judge at different events, helping others shape their ideas and navigate roadblocks. He remembers one event in Bangkok where he helped a first-time participant polish their project particularly fondly: “we stayed up debugging it until 3 a.m., and they ended up winning a category prize.”

Experiences like that have shaped his leadership approach ever since. “You grow by helping others grow,” he says. “Whether it’s code, career, or confidence — I try to be the kind of mentor I wish I had.”

Transitioning Into Engineering Roles

Yogesh learned many important lessons through hackathons, like quick thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving under pressure, which have all served him well in his professional work, where he approaches large-scale infrastructure challenges with a mindset focused on creating efficient, sustainable solutions.

At Amazon Web Services, Yogesh was part of the EC2 core platform networking team, helping improve the security and performance of cloud infrastructure used by some of the world’s biggest companies. One of his key contributions was an internal analytics tool that tracked how companies were using their own IP addresses on AWS — helping Amazon better predict future demand from enterprise clients, spot unusual activity, and reduce the risk of fraud.

At cloud communications company Twilio, he helped redesign core APIs and led projects to clean up massive, fragmented datasets across the company’s infrastructure — cutting operational costs while making the backend more reliable and efficient.

He later joined TaxBit, a startup helping users manage taxes on crypto and other digital assets. He led multiple efforts that allowed the company to process billions of blockchain transactions while ensuring they complied with complex tax rules, and also built “Event as a Service,” a tool that engineers a clearer view of how transactions moved across different services, which improved system observability.

He took on more and more responsibility in each role, not just as an engineer but as a leader: “I intentionally sought out roles where I could own problems end-to-end, not just contribute to a small piece.”

Lumino Labs: Building for the Next Generation of AI Developers

After a decade in enterprise tech, in 2023, Yogesh struck out on his own and founded Lumino Labs, a developer-focused infrastructure company that simplifies the hardest parts of building and scaling AI-powered applications.

The idea came at a critical time. As AI tools like ChatGPT began gaining popularity, the cost of GPUs (the hardware needed to run and train AI models) rapidly skyrocketed, leaving many small teams and independent developers suddenly unable to afford even basic hardware — forcing many promising ideas to stall at the prototype stage.

Lumino Labs was built to change that by letting teams rent GPUs at a fraction of the usual price, reducing AI computing costs by as much as 80% and enabling smaller teams to launch products that would otherwise require serious funding themselves. But for Yogesh, it’s not just about saving money — it’s about making this technology more accessible. “The future of AI doesn’t just depend on smarter models,” he concludes. “It depends on the people building the infrastructure to support them.”

Whether starting from scratch, using pre-built templates, or scaling an existing project, Lumino Labs gives developers the tools and infrastructure to fine-tune their model’s performance, optimize outputs, and keep data secure — all without managing complex backend systems.

Creating Better Infrastructure for Developers

Yogesh remains deeply involved in the tech world, recently speaking at events like DevCon Bangkok and  the DePIN Summit in New York on the topic of model training. His focus is on building tools that make it easier for others to do great work, and he considers Lumino Labs as part of that larger mission.
