meet an artist mondayIdentical twins Alejandro and Vicente Perez (aka the Perez Brothers) have always done everything together — from growing up in a South Gate community of lowrider aficionados, to getting the car culture bug and documenting the scene themselves, to attending Otis College of Art & Design, to developing a signature style of murals and paintings that embodies their whole story in every work of art. Working side by side in their studio, the brothers’ highly detailed, energetic, and colorful figures and scenes depict the people and local events (especially lowrider-centric  gatherings) they love, set off against empty grounds that highlight the crisp jauntiness and gentle strangeness in these striking snapshots of Southern California life. This is the final week to catch their show Cruise Night II at Thinkspace Projects in West Adams.

L.A. WEEKLY: What is your short answer to people who ask what your work is about?

THE PEREZ BROTHERS: Our work is about Los Angeles and the lowrider culture.

What would you be doing if you weren’t artists?

If we weren’t artists, we would be working for our Dad at V&S Trucking.

Did you go to art school? Why/Why not?

We both went to Otis College of Art and Design. We were into art in High School, and our AP art teacher suggested we apply, so we did.

Why do you live and work in L.A., and not elsewhere?

We were born and raised in L.A, and wouldn’t live anywhere else.
