Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday said he backed a proposed city boycott of Arizona business over the state's recent passage of a law that would allow police to stop people and ask them for proof of their immigration status.

The proposal by council members Janice Hahn, who's running for Lieutenant Governor of California, and Ed Reyes, would have the city “refrain from conducting business with the state of Arizona including participating in any conventions or other business that requires city resources, unless SB 1070 [the immigration law in question] … is repealed.''

Unfortunately, as we stated Wednesday, actually carrying out such a boycott would be difficult. The city's power grid depends on the Department of Water and Power's partial ownership of two Arizona power plants, L.A. also gets some of its water via an agreement with Arizona over Colorado River rights, and Arizona-based U.S. Airways has a fairly long-term lease at city run LAX.
