At a press conference this afternoon, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was asked about the city's top budget official, Miguel Santana, who entered treatment after being arrested for DUI last week.

“My heart and my prayers are with him and his family,” the mayor said, adding that Santana may need some time to get healthy before returning to work.

“It could be weeks,” he said. “It might be longer than that.”

In the meantime, Interim City Administrative Officer Ray Ciranna will be back in charge. Ciranna was at the helm from late 2008 to early 2009, when the city drifted into the current budget crisis.

Villaraigosa said not to worry, though, because Ciranna has been with the office for a long time.

“I meet with Ray Ciranna and the CAO weekly, almost daily,” Villaraigosa said. “There will be no gap in the information or assistance the CAO provides the council and myself.”
