Tom Nuttall, the U.S. West Coast correspondent for The Economist, told us he was interviewing the mayor about City Hall's efforts to halt runaway film production when the accident happened.

According to Nutall:

We'd barely got going when there was a noise and the mayor said he had to go.

The 12:20 p.m. collision happened at Second and Spring streets as the mayoral SUV was headed east on Second, Garcetti's office stated.

The woman who was hit might have been crossing the street on a red light or don't walk sign, according to reports. She was described as being in her 60s.

The mayor's office says she was hospitalized in good condition.

Garcetti travels in a Chevrolet Tahoe or GMC Yukon SUV driven by an LAPD officer. He's accompanied by a second cop. The SUV was described by the mayor's office as an LAPD vehicle.

Police and paramedics were quickly summoned to the scene.

The mayor, on the phone with Nutall, didn't see the accident, his office stated. He said of the woman, “I'm very concerned about her and wish her a speedy recovery.”

[Update at 1:11 p.m.]: Garcetti's office today named the woman as Juliet Nicolas. He met with her at the hospital at 11:30 a.m. The mayor:

I had the pleasure of meeting Juliet Nicolas this morning at LA County + USC Medical Center. We had a nice conversation and I am very pleased that she is in good spirits. I wish her a speedy recovery.
