Last month Mayor Eric Garcetti said he'd be quitting his active service in the U.S. Naval Reserve by the end of the year.

Turns out leading America's second-largest city is a fulltime job. But now another government institution is taking a piece of City Hall's top dog: Jury duty calls.

A friend of LA Weekly today spotted Garcetti reporting for duty this morning at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center downtown.

She told us Garcetti blended in and that no one seemed to notice him until his name was called. He was with an aide.

Yusef Robb, the mayor's spokesman, confirmed the jury duty to us, saying that Garcetti had yet to be assigned a case.

“My belief is that simply being mayor does not disqualify you from jury duty,” he said.

Which means your excuse will never fly.

[Update at 4:29 p.m.]: Garcetti was cut loose from jury duty after checking in today, his spokesman told us. He doesn't have to go back to court.
