When it comes to supporting modern and contemporary photography, it's hard to think of more enthusiastic and effective boosters than the Photographic Arts Council at LACMA and the Stephen Cohen Gallery — organizers of the annual season-highlight photoLA art fair. So the gallery's hosting of the wide-ranging group show Collectors' Favorites: Works From the Collections of Members of the LACMA Photographic Arts Council is a match made in darkroom heaven. Few other shows could assemble such a diverse range of first-rate photography in a dizzying array of styles representing emerging talents, vernacular voices and big names such as Bruce Davidson, Nan Goldin, Gregory Crewdson, Cindy Sherman and Atget. Even more impressive is what links the works: They're borrowed from the private collections of photography's most active supporters, all of whom provide written insight on their collecting priorities and acquisitions. Today at 2 p.m. is a panel discussion with leading collectors and LACMA's Prints & Drawing and Senior Photography Curator, Britt Salvesen.

Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Aug. 19. Continues through Sept. 3, 2011
