Max Taves, whose 2008 feature about UCLA's science researchers' battle with animal-rights extremists, appeared in the L.A. Weekly, has won this year's Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Award in the Print (Large Market) category. Taves' L.A. Weekly feature beat out entries that had appeared in the New York Times and Washington Post. The DeBakey awards are presented by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, which, the nonprofit foundation says, “honor[s] professional journalists whose reporting has enhanced public understanding of how the humane and responsible use of animal models leads to medical and scientific discoveries.”

The awards, and their $2,000 honoraria, will be presented at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., in June. Congratulations, Max!
