With the wide availability of medical marijuana in Southern California, we have wondered aloud what the appeal of synthetic, “Spice” pot was.

Perhaps it's that it seems to make you completely, utterly insane. The DEA had already essentially outlawed what was once an over-the-counter drug.

Cops in Costa Mesa say that didn't stop 23-year-old Matthew See from going bonkers and attacking an elderly couple during a particularly bad Spice trip over the weekend:

See was arrested Saturday for alleged robbery, burglary, false imprisonment and public intoxication, according to the Orange County Register.

Costa Mesa cops say he assaulted a 70-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband about 8 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Baker Street.

When officers showed up they found him dripping with sweat and rambling, according to the paper: He allegedly told them he had smoked Spice.

According to the Register, See approached the duo and then this:

As the husband stood up and walked away, See pushed him to the ground and took his sunglasses, according to police. After hearing the commotion, the woman opened the door so her husband could re-enter the apartment and See walked away.

Later, See returned and forced his way into the couple's home and accosted the woman several times and prevented the couple from leaving the apartment or calling authorities, police said.

He eventually left, and the couple was not badly hurt, police said. See bailed out of jail over the weekend.

His Facebook page says See is an engaged man from Torrance who's a 2010 UC Irvine alum.

The moral of the story? Spice, the best drug ever.
