Texas Missionary Couple Dead after Suspected DUI Collision near Manning Avenue

FRESNO COUNTY, CA (May 27, 2024)Mary and Paul Hardin died Saturday night and David Alvarado was arrested after a rear-end crash on northbound Highway 41.

Police officers responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m., near Manning Avenue.

Authorities report that Alvarado was driving a Ford F-250 when he rear-ended a Nissan Sentra and a Chevrolet Camaro, both stopped at a red light. Medical personnel on the scene pronounced the woman driving the Nissan, 65-year-old Mary from Helotes, Texas, dead.

Her passenger, 69-year-old Paul, was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday. It was noted that the couple were missionaries with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Eventually, authorities arrested the Ford driver, identified as 54-year-old David Alvarado from Madera, for felony DUI.

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash and will release more details when available.
