Marvin Hamlisch, the film and stage composer best known for his work on Chorus Line, died Aug. 6 after a brief illness at the age of 68. During his career, Hamlisch won nearly every award possible, including the Pulitzer Prize for drama, a Tony Award, three Academy Awards and four Emmy Awards.

Hamlisch became the lead conductor for the Pasadena Pops in 2011, and it was there that he gave his final performance. On July 21 of this year, just a few weeks before his death, Hamlisch conducted an evening of classics from the Great American Songbook with Michael Feinstein. The evening also featured a debut performance by Nick Ziobro, winner of Feinstein's Great American Songbook Competition and a budding young talent championed by Hamlisch.

The Pops, in a statement released after Hamlisch's death, said: “Marvin was here when we needed him with his vision and artistic guidance. He was a great friend and his music leaves an unforgettable legacy to the world. Marvin was a remarkable person and an incredible talent who will be dearly missed.”

Here are photos taken by Amy Gaskin from that night, showing one of the great American masters doing what he loved so much.
