Yesterday afternoon Martha Stewart was in town, signing her new book, Dinner at Home, at the Sur La Table at the Grove. (Read our interview with Stewart.) The lines stretched down 3rd street in patient formation, as everyone waited with their event tickets and a book (or books), a security guard on hand, the staff inside the store serving wine and canapés (from the book, of course), a reward for making it through the doors. The last time the store had lines even close to this long–they estimated a turnout of about 500–was when Mario Batali was in town.

It was a beautiful thing, as well-orchestrated as you might expect from a woman whose empire spans 67 books, television, internet and Twitter (1,593,960 followers as of this morning). If you couldn't make it to the Grove, there's always television: Martha will be on Jay Leno tonight. Maybe he'll let her drive the electric car. Or give the show a make-over. Or his time slot.
