German DJ Markus Schulz mixes progressive trance with house. Know for varying his sets according to the crowd's temperature, so far this year, he has performed at Ultra Music Festival and Beyond Wonderland, and is currently on tour promoting his latest album, Scream. Saturday night at the Avalon was the tour's finale, and we were there.
Before the show, the press got a chance to speak with Schulz about his upcoming Scream II album due out this fall. “I have been listening to a lot of classic rock lately,” he said. “Before the Scream tour I studied Dark Side of the Moon.”
As for the show itself, weed smoke pervaded all night long. The crowd was a mix of casual and folks who were dressed to impress. Regardless, everyone was dancing.
Opening acts KhoMha and The M Machine both killed it with aggressive, energetic sets, which set the tone for the night. By the time Schulz took the stage, people were freaking out, chanting his name at the top of their lungs. Once Schulz's set began, it was all peace, love, and unicorns — no,seriously, when “Scream” came on go-go dancers dressed as rainbow-colored unicorns came out. They were holding light-up foam swords as well as blow-up unicorns, which they tossed onto the dance floor.

Schulz played a mix of tracks from his new album as well as some old-school tracks. Hits like “Love Rain Down,” “Romper,” a remix of Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike's “Mammoth,” “Do You Dream,” “Nothing Without Me,” and “Digital Madness” gave the crowd an extra push.
During our favorite track, “Loops and Tings,” beer was spilling and the crowd was swaying; unfortunately, the crowd was also spraying their beer — in our face — which caused us to smell like a brewery. In any case, Schulz brought a mix of aggression and harmony to the Avalon, leaving the crowd wanting more, despite the fact that it was almost daybreak when it finished.
The Crowd: Girls in short sparkly dresses with sharp stiletto heels, middle-aged horny men dressed in button up pink shirts and reeking of smelly cologne, and a crowd of youngsters dressed casually and ready to throw down.
Overheard in the Crowd: “I will pay you $20 for that unicorn!”
Random Notebook Dump: Men seemed to grab ladies first and ask for a dance later. If you want to dance, you should ask first; sheesh.
