Passion and talent can take a person far, but they can change lives if they combine them with ambition, entrepreneurial spirit, and a sense of social responsibility. These people utilize their success as a platform to uplift others, turning years of dedication and struggle into opportunities for themselves and those around them. Marion Clark is one of those individuals.
At only 27 years old, Clark became a team owner in The Basketball League (TBL). His journey from a young basketball player with dreams of the National Basketball Association (NBA) to an entrepreneur and a team owner attests to what perseverance and vision could do. Today, as the owner of the Willamette Valley Jaguars, he shows that sports can be a vehicle for change that can unite and empower a community.
Clark has loved basketball since he was three years old. Growing up in Los Angeles, he was drawn to the sport, watching the Lakers dominate the court and naturally developing a passion he would cherish for much of his life. Clark spent his early years playing for local youth programs. These experiences sharpened his skills and taught him the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and community engagement.
Out of high school, Clark had multiple Division I offers, but he knew committing to the wrong school meant being locked into a situation that didn’t align with his aspirations. He realized that he loved the game, but not under just any circumstances. Clark eventually decided to turn pro instead of pursuing college basketball—a bold move, but he was never one to settle.

Coaches, mentors, and family members helped shape Clark’s understanding of the game and life. He brought the lessons he learned through them to heart, carrying them with him as he became a standout player in LA. He chased his NBA dream and traveled across the country to every G-League tryout he could find. Unfortunately, injuries and setbacks forced him to close that chapter.
Clark didn’t let himself dwell on lost opportunities, however. He instead turned his focus toward another dream—owning a basketball team. Even as Clark pursued basketball, he had an entrepreneurial drive. He ventured into real estate, starting with property management. He then made a game-changing investment, purchasing a duplex for hundreds of thousands of dollars and later selling it for nearly double the price. This success enabled him to finally work on his greatest venture.
In 2023, Clark founded the Willamette Valley Jaguars, a professional basketball team in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. His mission for the team was about leveraging basketball as a tool to strengthen the community. The Jaguars offer affordable, family-oriented entertainment and serve as mentors, role models, and active contributors to the local area. Their goal is to provide opportunities for young athletes and create a culture of inclusivity and growth, catalyzing change in Willamette Valley and beyond.
“I want to give others the chances that didn’t exist when I was playing. I know what it takes to compete at the highest level, and I want to make sure these players have access to that same knowledge and opportunity,” Clark shares.
Ever committed to the people he serves, Clark developed multiple initiatives through Willamette Valley Jaguars, often funding them out of his own pocket. He invested tens of thousands of dollars in the past year alone. “I do this because I believe basketball should be accessible to everyone, and the team should be a pillar of support for the community,” the team owner remarks.
This very belief is reflected in the Jaguars’ uplifting projects. One involves ensuring that all kids 12 and under can attend Jaguars games for free. “Financial barriers should never keep a child from experiencing the excitement and inspiration of live sports,” Clark stresses. The Jaguars also offer a free internship program to break down barriers for minorities, LGBTQ individuals, and women who aspire to work in sports. Clark understands the challenges these groups face in gaining experience. Therefore, this initiative aims to provide them with hands-on opportunities that can jumpstart their careers.
In addition, the team runs the Willamette Valley Jaguars Youth Camp to help young athletes develop skills, confidence, and discipline. Recently, they also launched Game Changer Spotlight Nights, where they highlight and support local organizations by donating 5% of ticket sales (after venue costs) to featured nonprofits.
One can say Clark’s dedication to the community is part of his DNA. He was surrounded by family members who were deeply involved in community service. His grandfather worked at their church, and his uncles ran for public office. With their family’s history in Compton dating back to the 1930s, giving back wasn’t an option in their household but an expectation. This shaped his lifelong commitment to service.
Marion Clark’s next goal is even bigger. He hopes to build a stadium in Willamette Valley to create a multi-purpose venue that can host concerts, boxing matches, and other events to bring more resources and economic growth to the region. It might be a bold plan. However, for someone like Clark, who has already proven that age, setbacks, and obstacles mean nothing when passion and purpose are aligned, it’s just another step in the journey.
