Dear Californians:

We understand that you love your legal weed, what with all the back pain and cataracts going around these days.

But your easy access to cannabis retailers and subsequent water-pipe enthusiasm at home might be rubbing off on your pets:

Following a study last year in the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care that found a fourfold increase in the number of dogs that had to be treated for cannabis exposure from 2005 to 2010, a new report says much of the same:

The Pet Poison Helpline (yes there is a Pet Poison Helpline — 800-213-6680) says in a statement issued yesterday that it has seen “a 200 percent increase in the number of cases for pets that have ingested marijuana” in recent years.

Ahna Brutlag, associate director of veterinary services at Pet Poison Helpline:

The trend we've seen in recent years involving pets and marijuana is significant. Of all illicit drugs, marijuana has always been responsible for the most calls to Pet Poison Helpline, but this recent increase is the sharpest we have ever seen.

Experts say Fido can eat your edibles laced with THC, get into your stash, and even suffer the effects of second-hand toke smoke.

And — we can't emphasize this enough — stop blowing smoke into your pooch's snout. It's cute, but in extreme cases, the Pet Poison Helpline experts say, marijuana can kill your dog.

That would totally harsh your mellow.
