A man died Thursday after he was shot by Los Angeles police in North Hills, authorities said. The deceased, described as someone in his 20s, might have been mentally ill.

Officers were called to the area of Burnet Avenue near Roscoe Boulevard and opened fire about 12:30 p.m., said Officer April Harding of the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities were dispatched based on a report of a mentally ill person in the area, according to Los Angeles police Officer Rosario Herrera.

No officers were hurt, but the Los Angeles Times reported that the suspect was armed with a two-foot long fire poker.
