An investigation is underway after Torrance Police Department found a man ‘passed out’ in a car full of stolen items, including 300 California recall election ballots.

The arrest was made on August 16, outside of a Torrance 7-Eleven, with Torrance PD saying they found thousands of pieces of mail, including the ballots. Also found in the car were Xanax pills, methamphetamine, credit cards, drivers licences and a loaded firearm.

“This case is currently being investigated by our Special Investigations Division in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service and the LA County District Attorney Public Integrity Unit,” Torrance PD said in an update Monday. “Investigators are trying to figure out how the election ballots ended up in the suspect’s vehicle and what their intent was in having them.”

The department added that the case is not connected to any other ballot thefts and the recovered ballots, which were not yet filled, will be replaced and redistributed.

The man was arrested on charges for possession of narcotics and a firearm, as well as suspicion of forgery.
