A man was fatally shot in a Westside neighborhood last night, authorities said.

The victim was identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as 30-year-old James Gregory Jackson. He was taken by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Jackson was standing outside a residence in the 3100 block of Canfield Avenue in the South Robertson area about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when several shots were fired at him, a detective told us.

“The circumstances and motive for this homicide are unknown,” the LAPD said in a statement.

Although the area near Hamilton High School is not immune to gang violence, the detective we spoke with said “nothing indicates” that this was gang-related.

Investigators were canvassing the neighborhood today in a search for clues, he said.

Anyone with information on the murder was asked to call West Bureau Homicide detectives at (213) 382-9470.
