This kind of thing usually only happens in movies.

A couple moving from one apartment to another in the same Burbank building noticed stuffed toys being dropped from a third-level apartment window, police said. They yelled at a toddler dropping those furry bombs to stop it, but instead of stopping the 3-and-a-half-year-old decided to take a dive himself, Burbank cops told us.

It all ended well, however:

Seeing the toddler pop out of the window, Konrad Lightner grabbed a mattress that was in transit and placed it strategically below, Sgt. Darin Ryburn said.

When the boy dropped, however, he got tangled up on utility wires, he said, giving Lightner time to get himself positioned, too. The boy dangled there for a minute.

The toddler's second and final drop put him right in the arms of that neighbor waiting on the ground level, according to Ryburn.

“That guy saved that baby's life,” he said.

It happened about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in an alley behind the 4100 block of Kling Street, police said. Officers were en route, and so were paramedics and firefighters, who had been called by the Lightners, Ryburn said.

But by the time the cavalry arrived the 3-year-old was safe in the arms of his parents, who had been at home with their hands full taking care of as many as two other children, the sergeant said. As soon as they realized what happened they ran to the scene below, he said.

Paramedics checked out the toddler and found nothing wrong. But the boy was taken to a hospital for observation just in case, Ryburn said.

Police have an open investigation, and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services officials were called to check out the situation, which they did, he said.

However, at this point cops don't suspect the parents did anything wrong, Ryburn said.

The Lightners were being hailed as heroes. So much so that apartment management was asking reporters to stay off the property.
