A 36-year-old bicyclist who was apparently training for an upcoming Ironman Triathlon was fatally struck by a Metro bus on the PCH in Malibu over the weekend.

The tragic collision might have been an accident, according to what sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks told the Weekly.

The woman was riding on Pacific Coast Highway when …

… her handlebars might have struck a parked car, causing her to swerve into the path of the bus, he said.

That scenario was given by the bus driver, however, and should be considered “preliminary,” Brooks told us.

It happened about 1:50 p.m. Saturday in the 25000 block of Pacific Coast Highway, he said.

She was killed “instantly,” the sergeant said.

She might have been training for the Ironman, he added.

The investigation was ongoing. The woman's ID was withheld while family was notified.
