Remember the gal who says “I smell cake” in that commercial for AOL? That's Erin Foley, host of the three-years-running Gays R Us stand-up comedy night at the Improv. Foley's found the most depressing book in the world: Vegan Cooking For One. “No meat, no fish, no dairy, no friends — screw it! Throw in the towel!”

L.A. WEEKLY: Who do people say you look like?

Jennifer Connelly (on her worst day) and some chick from a cooking show, Claire Robinson.

Serious question: Do you find that homophobia still exists at mainstream comedy clubs in 2010?

Homophobia still exists everywhere, so yes I'm sure it comes into play at comedy clubs. It's extremely hard for women and gays in mainstream clubs, but I don't focus on that. I've had great experiences at the clubs. I'm a believer that hard work and talent prevails.

If you could call a moratorium on one overused stand-up premise, what would it be?

“Dating is hard.”

Does your mother approve of your career choice?

She definitely wants me to be happy and has always encouraged my sisters and I to do what we love. That being said, I think she's slightly horrified that I stand in front of people and talk about my life!

What do you do all day on the road?

I clean the side of the road.

If your comedy were a musical genre, what would it be?

Pop rock with a splash of soft rock.

What's the funniest thing about L.A.?

The citizens are all lunatics. But I enjoy lunatics.

Which audience is tougher to make laugh, New York or L.A.?

I really can't tell. L.A. and NYC have fun crowds. Depends on the night and how much they've had to drink.

Why should a straight person come to “Gays R Us”?

We always have a great mix of straight and gay comics. Funny is funny, and “Gays R Us” was started to bring both communities together. It's always an absolute blast.
