Paul F. Tompkins celebrates the eighth anniversary of The Paul F. Tompkins Show some special guests who will be revealed at the end of this interview. –Libby Molyneaux

LAW: What have been some highlights of the PFT Show ?

TOMPKINS: Re-creating the moment Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald, featuring Brian Unger, Jack Black and the song “November Rain.” Singing Donovan's “Atlantis” with Colin Hay, Jennifer Coolidge, Samm Levine and Andy Richter. Having Tim Meadows read Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have A Dream” speech as translated by the Google Voice transcription service. Many, many more. More than three.

Who are some of your dream guests?

If I could get absolutely anybody in the world, I'd love to have Peter O'Toole do anything on the show at all. Even if he just wordlessly walked across the stage. That's also probably the most realistic scenario if I were ever able to book him. Slightly more possible would be Ben Gibbard and Jon Hamm, two guys I've become friendly with and would love to play around with on stage. Any cast member of SCTV.

You were living in New York doing Best Week Ever for quite a while. How famous did you feel walking down the street?

The streets are filled with people, so I always felt anonymo.us. And yet, New York is the only place I've ever been where I'd get recognized by someone just driving by in a car. When someone honks at you and you look, expecting the worst, but the person in the car gives you a thumbs-up and a big smile, that is a nice thing indeed.

What did you miss about L.A.? Are you glad to be back?

I missed Los Angeles's notable lack of bitterly cold winters that crack your bones from the inside. I am glad to be back.

What's the one subject that you've never been able to make a joke about?

Oh, I'm sure some aspect of my own personality. I'm more of a “disher-outer” than a “taker.”

If your comedy were a musical genre, what would it be?

Oh, you know, Dixieland fusion.

If you could call a moratorium on one over-used stand-up premise, what would it be?

“Ironic” racism.”

What can audiences expect at March 25 show?

Some great music with The Watkins Family, a funny sketch with me and Ed Helms, and a couple surprises that I'm very excited about. I can't give any suggestions as to what those surprises are, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting that new bike I've been hinting about.
