The city of Los Angeles announced that “severe weather” caused vaccine delivery delays and Friday vaccinations will be postponed at large-scale sites.

More than 12,500 COVID-19 vaccine appointments will affected and once the supply does come in, patients will be receiving an email, text or phone call for an automatically rescheduled date.

“Severe weather across the country has disrupted travel and shipping nationwide, including delaying the delivery of our vaccines,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. “Our City is ready to administer COVID-19 vaccines swiftly, safely, and equitably — and as soon as doses arrive in Los Angeles, we will get them into people’s arms immediately.”

The vaccine deliveries were originally scheduled to arrive in Los Angeles Tuesday, but the supply is currently in Kentucky, with a shipment for next week’s appointments being in Tennessee.

The city’s mobile clinics will not be affected by the delays, but the city does not yet know the status for Saturday’s scheduled appointments.

“We are collaborating closely with the City of Los Angeles to ensure the vaccination distribution process is as smooth as possible,” Dr. Sujal Mandavia, Chief Medical Officer of Carbon Health said in a statement. “Second dose appointments will be prioritized, and it is our intent to administer those second doses within the CDC-recommended timeframe of 42 days after the first dose.”

The delays come a week after Los Angeles had to shut down its vaccine operations for the weekend due to lack of supply.

While addressing the lack of vaccine supply in L.A. County, Public Health director Barbara Ferrer said the county has the ability to vaccinate more than 600,000 people per week, but is only getting enough supply for 200,000.

Mayor Garcetti said the city will be monitoring the situation and updating the status for Saturday’s appointments when more information becomes available.
