More than 52 million people living in the United States struggle with mental health issues. And although mental illness is far more common than most realize, there is still a bit of a stigma surrounding it, with many people feeling ashamed or embarrassed to speak out about their experiences and struggles. One underground hip-hop artist and Los Angeles native, 8corpses, strives to change that through the art of storytelling in his songs.

Born and raised in the City of Angels, 8corspes has experienced his share of mental health struggles, including schizophrenia, addiction, and PTSD. While not much is known about him aside from what he’s previously shared with news outlets, the mysteriousness of it all makes listening to his music even more enjoyable. He doesn’t care so much about the personal spotlight he would rather have people focus more on listening to the words he raps in each song.

Using his passion for writing as an outlet to cope with the trauma experienced throughout his life, including the death of his father in which he suffocated because of a pulmonary embolism. 8corpses has created dozens of meaningful songs with powerful, touching lyrics that his fans can relate to each time they listen. Having gained notoriety for two of his major hits, “Stoned” and “Diablo,” he continues to focus on raising awareness for mental health issues through his lyricism.

“I believe that in today’s world, many people suffer from mental health issues, but some are scared to talk about them or let others know what they’re going through. My goal is to make the listeners feel comfortable and accepted for who they are while reminding them they’re not alone in this fight,” shared 8corpses. “I’ve struggled with my mental health for years as someone who has dealt with addictions, PTSD, and schizophrenia on and off. However, music helps ease the burden and has become a coping mechanism. Many of my fans have told me how much they appreciate my lyricism because they can relate to it based on things they’ve experienced in their own lives, using the songs as their own coping mechanism.”

While he uses personal experiences to create relatable lyrics for his fans to enjoy, he also draws inspiration from many musical groups, including Cypress Hill. Although these accomplished groups inspire him, he always adds a unique twist to each song while setting himself apart from other artists.

“I consider myself an old-school hip-hop artist who still stays up-to-date on the latest trends. I try to incorporate a little bit of everything into my music to stand out and capture attention while telling a story. I’m making a name for myself and have earned quite the reputation within the underground music community for my music, but this is only the beginning for me,” he said.

Despite his rough upbringing and the many challenges faced throughout the years, including stays at detention facilities and multiple institutions, 8corpses has become a leading light in the underground music industry and has no intention of stopping anytime soon. While he realizes that the industry continues to evolve, he plans to do the same.
