Last night the LBC didn't disappoint: A cop heard shots fired, responded to a murder in progress, took rounds that ended up hitting his black-and-white, and critically wounded the suspect.
That's the story according to the Long Beach Police Department today. And they provided photos of said cop cruiser, too:
It started at 12:02 a.m. today when an officer on patrol near Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue heard shots being fired there and rushed to the scene, according to an LBPD statement.
When he rolled up a 60-something suspect, who remains unidentified, was walking away and opened fire on the cop, police say.
Rounds hit the patrol car's hood and windshield “narrowly missing the officer who was still in the car,” according to the statement.

The officer returned fire and hit the man, who was subsequently hospitalized in critical condition, according to the department.
Meanwhile, there was a man in his 30s down on the sidewalk, the victim of those original shots heard: According to the LBPD he “was pronounced deceased several hours later.”
He was not ID'd either.
The shootout was under investigation. Any witnesses were asked to call detectives at 562-570-7244.
