Update: The Long Beach man has died, and been potentially identified. For the full story, click here.

One reckless Long Beach man's near-suicide last night is still shrouded in mystery. Long Beach firefighters and paramedics found him completely engulfed in flames near some bushes in a dry part of the concrete Los Angeles Riverbed.

LB Fire Captain Richard Brandt told City News Service last night: “He said he had reasons for doing it…”

“He didn't say why, but he said he had reasons.''

The man doused himself in gasoline before setting himself on fire at 9 p.m. on Monday. It was enough to cover 90 percent of his body in second- and third-degree burns.

The rest, like we said, is still just speculation. As of last night, the man was in serious condition en route to the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, but we're still waiting on word of his current status. You'll be the first to know.
