Tallula’s is a great neighborhood Mexican restaurant in Santa Monica Canyon, steps from the beach. The kitchen is overseen by Rustic Canyon chef/co-owner Jeremy Fox. The ingredients don’t travel far to get there — most are sourced from the Santa Monica farmers markets throughout the week. Taco selections include grilled swordfish with red sauerkraut, dill, epazote and malt aioli; and the vegetarian, with fried yam, black beans, charred salsa, crema and shiso. If you can’t decide, leave it to the chef and go for the single XL taco, created daily. Try the signature potato enchiladas with salsa verde, peas, green garlic and pistachios. House-made tortillas are the perfect vehicle for the grilled carne asada made with grass-fed hanger steak, shaved vegetables and chipotle steak sauce. There are plenty of Mexican beers on tap, and margaritas, of course. Try the Westsider, made with Reposada tequila, elderflower liqueur, fresh lime, mint, cucumber and jalapeño. If you’re just going for happy hour, get the nachos sencillo to share. —Michele Stueven
