For two decades, Sea Harbour Seafood has been the San Gabriel Valley’s premier fine-dining Chinese restaurant. Lavish chandeliers decorate the expansive dining room, masking the fact that it was formerly a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour. The glossy leather–bound dinner menu is filled with aesthetically pleasing gastronomic delights: lacquered, mahogany-hued deep-fried squab, braised sea cucumber in a sprightly XO sauce, whole Dungeness crab pulled fresh from the tank and fried with preserved thousand-year-old egg yolk and a deceptively simple steamed live red cod. The meticulous preparation of these intricate dishes is second to none. The restaurant was one of the first of its kind in the Valley to do away with dim sum carts; simply check off the dim sum you want on a paper menu and each dish arrives fresh from the kitchen. Har gow pop with the sweet essence of shrimp. Egg custard tarts are not too sweet, with the vibrant flavor of pure egg yolk. The purple taro cake is the lighter-than-air pound cake of your gastronomic dreams. Year after year, Sea Harbour continues to serve up Cantonese cuisine of surprising quality. —Kayvan Gabbay
