Riding up the escalator from the MacArthur Park red line station feels like entering another world. You’ll see two tile murals inside, and then as you ascend up to Alvarado, the sky breaks open and birds seem to begin chirping. In the open air you don't look back to the underworld you've left behind, but take in a park: lovers on the grass, and birds sleeping on an island that lies in a lake that shouldn't exist.
