If you have a hankering for some upscale comfort food, Jar Beverly Grove is still one of the best chop houses in town. Retro specialties from acclaimed chef-owner Suzanne Tracht and Bangkok native Preech Narkthong include the signature pot roast, the 16-ounce dry aged Kansas City steak, and black mussels with lobster béarnaise and fennel salt. There's also a pan-roasted wild king salmon. With any beef or fish, there's a choice of sauce; options include the standard béarnaise, lobster béarnaise, tamarind, green peppercorn, creamy horseradish, lemon caper-berry relish with extra virgin olive oil, spicy mustard and thyme butter. Tracht's thin garlic-parsley french fries are legendary, as are the sautéed pea tendrils with garlic. Start the evening in the elegant dining room with a Hendricks' Gibson infused with rose and cucumber and finish it off with the sublime butterscotch pudding with salted caramel or a classic banana cream pie with caramel sauce. —Michele Stueven
