Just a stone’s throw from Chinatown and Dodger Stadium, Eastside Market Italian Deli, opened in 1929, is one of the last remaining Italian delis downtown. Brothers Johnny and Frank Anguili took over the family business in 1975, serving lunch to City Hall employees, stadium-goers deviating from hot dogs, and everyone in between. With the exception of a few pasta dishes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the deli’s main draw is the sandwiches. No fancy pressed panini here, just simple and messy old-fashioned subs, all priced at $8.90. You could warm your belly and go through a stack of napkins with something hot, like the sausage and peppers, Italian meatballs, eggplant parmigiana or pastrami soaked in sauce. If you don’t wanna pass out at your desk, opt for something light and pile on cold cuts like mortadella, capicollo and salami with cheese. The house favorite? The D.A. Special with sausage, meatballs, pastrami and roast beef. It’ll make you wanna swear off chain places for good.
