Point guard Jeremy Lin is reportedly coming to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Even if the news turns out to be false, the prospect of getting the 6 foot, 3 inch point guard's electric smile to L.A. set off a round of so-called Linsanity on social media today.

The Houston Rockets star is a rare Asian American in the NBA, and he's [corrected]: one of the first players in the league to have Taiwanese or Chinese heritage. That could be a very big deal in this market:

Los Angeles and New York vie for the title of American metro area with the most people of Asian descent. And keep in mind that Orange County, part of the L.A. media market, ranks near the top of that list, too.

The Lakers' reported acquisition of Lin could expand the team's appeal for an economically powerful demographic in town.

The team hasn't announced anything yet, but ESPN and a few other outlets say it's a go.

According to the sports network, the Rockets are trading Lin and a future first-round pick to the Lakers. Here's how it explains things:

The Lakers were amenable to this deal, according to sources, because Lin is only under contract for one more season, thus preserving their cap space next summer. They also covet draft picks, after trading away their first-round picks in 2015 and 2017 to Phoenix and Orlando as part of the Steve Nash and Dwight Howard trades, respectively.

An L.A. with Lin in it could certainly create some fresh excitement for a team that had more than twice as many losses as wins last season.
