UPDATE: We have just been notified by the club that due to construction difficulties and delays, the grand re-opening of China Club is now Thurs., July 18.

TRU NIGHTCLUB

1600 Argyle St., Hlywd., 8 p.m., Thurs., July 24, and every Thurs. thereafter

Yes, you can go home again — at least, you can return to the legendary hot spot China Club, which returns to its original location at the corner of Argyle and Selma on Monday night. Secret shows by big-name bands and all-star jams are commonplace these days in Los Angeles, but back in the late '80s and early '90s, China's ProJam was the gathering that set the standard, fusing velvet-rope exclusivity with incredible rock pairings onstage — think Rick James grooving with Wayne Newton, Sting singing with The Boss, Tom Jones gyrating next to Billy Idol. And it was all backed by the ProJam house band, featuring musicians whose regular gigs were with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Conan O'Brien.

Host/wrangler Allan Kaufman and biggie club booker Steve Scarduzio have joined forces to bring it all back and then some, transforming the newish space known as Tru Nightclub into China Club every Monday with signage, stage and sound, as well the original house band and its celebrity music peers. Expect tons of “surprise guests” from the old days, plus a procession of new-guard rockers and soulsters, an up-and-coming band opening each week and a hot DJ spinning in the main room and for dancing downstairs in the VIP room — which, with this crew, surely will be as packed as the stage.
