OK, it wasn't a real night club, only an art installation, but the second installment of LTD L.A. Art Gallery's exhibit/re-creation of Rodney Bingenheimer's famed '70s glam rock hangout Rodney's English Disco sure felt like a real hot spot. Housed in the same spot as the club in the '70s, the gallery soiree had “The Mayor of the Sunset Strip” himself deejaying behind the decks as a sparkle-adorned crowd danced and drank. Among the revelers were real rock stars and former groupies who partied with Bowie, Iggy and Led Zep back in the day. Blondie's Clem Burke and Frank Infante, musician Sirius Trixon and producer Nick Launay reminisced along with a new generation of neo-glamsters including Kate Crash, Christa Collins and Prima Donna's Kevin Preston. The attention to detail was uncanny. The DJ area and adjacent VIP booth were re-created exactly, right down to the ephemera Rodney used to decorate the wall behind him at the old club: pics of his departed pal David Bowie, a Slade banner and album jackets from The Beatles and The Stones. As Bingenheimer himself would say, Friday night it was “all happening!”
