The 50-year-old parolee who is accused of killing 17-year-old Lily Burk made his first court appearance in the Los Angeles Criminal Courts Building this afternoon. However, Charlie Samuel didn't enter a plea. His arraignment was rescheduled for August 20. He remains in custody without bail.

The District Attorney's office charged Samuel with murder — a charge that includes the special allegations of murder during the commission of a kidnapping, and murder during the commission of a robbery, which could make him eligible for the death penalty.

Burk was abducted in the middle of the day July 24 near Southwestern Law School after she ran an errand for her mother, a lawyer and professor at the school. Her body was found the following morning in a parking lot near Fifth and Alameda streets. The coroner has yet to rule on the cause of death but there are reports circulating that she had a wound to her throat, plus head injuries.

Samuel has a long history of petty crimes and spent time in state

prison for burglary and robbery. He was released last August and was

allegedly staying at a drug treatment program at the time of the

daylight attack.
