For It is Written at LACE. An experimental music performance by Teira, featuring Maam (organ) and Karl McComas Reichl (cello) incorporating various styles of Black diasporic sonic cultures — from gospel to trap — to explore themes of resurrection and labor. In this newly crafted performance piece, musician and sound artist Teira will utilize organ, cello, and analog devices as channels into the spiritual and historical frequencies of Black Angelenos. For It is Written is staged in conjunction with PARABLE 003, an eclectic group exhibition of visual and conceptual art; building on the exhibition’s themes of Black diasporic cultures, experimental process, and the radical traditions of Black liberation. 6522 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood; Thursday, October 28, 7-9pm; $10; welcometolace.org.

Hamza Walker and Wolfgang Tillmans in Conversation at REDCAT. Labyrinth of Cinema at the Music Hall. The final film by Nobuhiko Obayashi finds the late director returning to the subject of Japan’s history of warfare. On the last night of its existence, a small movie theater in Onomichi — the seaside town of Obayashi’s youth where he shot nearly a dozen films — screens an all-night marathon of Japanese war films. When lightning strikes the theater, three young men are transported into the world onscreen where they experience the violent battles of several wars leading up to the bombing of Hiroshima. Kim Dingle at Vielmetter Los Angeles

Kim Dingle: Pudgey Pomona Presents at Vielmetter Los Angeles. What do marbles, vintage erasers, maps painted by Las Vegas teenagers, and an atlas of animals have in common? Not much — but they are all subjects of interest to Pudgey Pomona, reference librarian, who has curated a collection of curiosities and collectibles, some by the hand of Los Angeles-based artist, Kim Dingle. Plus, Miss Pomona has also curated an exhibition of works by the artist Francesca Lalanne who is not a party to nepotism. The exhibition will be on view in the Library (located at Vielmetter Los Angeles) where Miss Pomona has set up shop and parked her lime green jaguar. 1700 S. Joe Rudko at Von Lintel Gallery
Joe Rudko: United Colors at Von Lintel Gallery. Rudko collected thousands of personal snapshots from friends, family, and anonymous internet vendors before deconstructing and intricately arranging them into large vibrant color fields. These photomontages of vernacular analog photographs, evoke intimate memories and strong personal associations. Each work brings together diverse imagery from over a century of the printed image, while using color as the unifying principle. Although inherently photographic, they also become abstractions, with sharp details that root them in the world of representation, tying them to a specific time and place. Arranged within a structural grid, they are influenced by both Mesopotamian mosaics and the digital pixel. Dia de los Muertos at Self Help Graphics
48th Annual Dia de los Muertos at Self Help Graphics. The city’s most beloved tradition returns live, with performances curated by The Paramount from bands Archer Oh, Introverted Funk, The Mumfees, and Lucys, as well Blanca Soto and Claudia Diaz presenting Teatro y Danza Tierra Blanca. Shop their legendary Muertos Market filled with art and goods for sale by local artists and artisans, view the altars, eat delicious food prepared by local street food vendors, and view the exhibition Everything Connected: Land, Body, Cosmos, curated by our 2021 Commemorative Print Artist, Miyo Stevens-Gandara (on view through November 24). Come early and deck out your car as a moving altar for the Car Caravan, or dress up in your favorite Día de los Muertos fashion and take part in the walking Procession. (Bike night is November 6.) Karim Shuquem (LAST Projects) in High Beams #5 at the Bendix Building
High Beams #5: Night Moves at the Bendix Building (Outdoor). The fifth iteration of the nomadic outdoor experience, positioned beneath the iconic red neon Bendix sign on the building’s rooftop, Night Moves will be the first High Beams project accessible by foot traffic only. Participating galleries include 515, CACtTUS, Durden and Ray, Last Ditch, LAST Projects, Monte Vista Projects, Museum Adjacent, San Francisco Artists Alumni, and Tiger Strikes Asteroid LA — many of which reside in the Bendix. Several works were created in response to the breathtaking views of downtown, including Jamie Hamilton’s 12 x 25 foot aerial net that will allow viewers to relax while taking in the setting; Chelsea Boxwell’s fabric pillars that mimic the forms of nearby skyscrapers; Ben Jackel’s ceramic hanging airplane that gently drifts high in clouds; and Ismael de Anda III’s interactive video installation that uses drone technology and projections for an evolving tableau of the downtown skyline. 1206 Maple Ave., rooftop; downtown; Saturday – Sunday, October 30-31, 8-10pm; free; highbeams.art.
