Male Bicyclist Dead after Two-Vehicle Collision near Interstate 80

SPARKS, NV (May 16, 2023) Thursday afternoon, a bicycle and vehicle crash on Prater Way claimed the life of Lewis Leonard. The accident took place near the onramp to eastbound Interstate 80 around 5:00 p.m. on April 27th. According to the State Patrol, a bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Prater Way when it failed to stop at a red light and went into the path of a white Volkswagen Atlas SUV was traveling westbound on Prater Way turning left onto the I-80 eastbound on-ramp. The driver of the SUV did not have enough time to stop and crashed into the left side of the bicycle which ejected the rider from the bicycle. Paramedics arrived and rushed the bicyclist to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police identified the victim as 67-year-old Lewis Leonard from Sparks. Meanwhile, the SUV driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the officers. At this time, it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. However, an active investigation is underway.
