Two Dead after Fatal Wrong-Way Collision near 78th Avenue

OAKLAND, CA (February 8, 2022) – A wrong-way crash on International Boulevard left Leroy Rodrigues and Alejandro Herrera Miranda dead Tuesday evening.

According to Oakland Police, the accident occurred around 9:36 p.m., near 78th Avenue. For reasons unknown, 26-year-old Rodrigues was driving a Ford Fusion along a bus lane.

Shortly after, his vehicle crossed over into the westbound lane, eventually colliding head-on with a Nissan.  Miranda, a 17-year-old passenger in the Nissan, died at the scene along with Rodrigues.

Meanwhile, police said the Nissan’s 16-year-old driver tried feeling the scene after the impact but was eventually caught and detained.

Crews later took the suspect driver to a hospital for treatment of injuries, including a broken wrist. At this time, police have yet to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
