Valley parents, fed up with the fractious fighting between the L.A. Unified School District and union leaders of the United Teachers Los Angeles, have recently formed a third-force movement called the Lemonade Initiative. (“When you're given lemonades,” etc.) This morning, at 10 a.m., the group will hold its first march and rally to push its proposals that the LAUSD immediately use federal stimulus funds to keep teachers on the job, to get UTLA to reform its positions on teacher tenure, and to get both the LAUSD and UTLA to bury their respective hatchets long during the budget crisis to make the schools run.

The Lemonade Initiative' says its goals include, dreamily enough, having parents set up a lemonade stand each Friday in front of every L.A. school. Perhaps the group could compromise with the unions' Pink Slip Fridays and merge them with Pink Lemonade Fridays. Today's speakers include NPR commentator/school mom Sandra Tsing Loh, LAUSD board member Tamar Galatzan and Jason Leon, a teacher and UTLA member.
