While no threats have been issued in Los Angeles, local law enforcement is monitoring railways in response to Tuesday’s New York subway shooting.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) said it is working with Metro Los Angeles and has deputies at railways as a means of precaution.

“While our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this heinous act, we are deploying our resources to keep you safe,” LASD said Tuesday. “Although, so far, we have no specific threat to Los Angeles transit, we take nothing for granted and continue to follow up on all intelligence.”

While LAPD did not indicate it is taking any additional measures, it stated it would continue to deploy “high visibility patrols.”

“The LAPD is closely monitoring reports of a multiple victim shooting this morning at a subway train station in Brooklyn,” LAPD said in a statement. “We’re in contact with our local, state & federal partners, and as always, providing high visibility patrols throughout the city, including bus & rail stations.”

At around 8:23 a.m. EST, a gunman boarded the N-train in Brooklyn, opened fire injuring at least 20, 10 as a result of gunshot wounds and five in critical, but stable condition.

“We’re only able to get a limited amount of information because it is under investigation,”  Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said during a briefing on Tuesday. “As the train was pulling into the station, the suspect put on a gas mask, opened a canister that was in his bag and then the car filled with smoke. After that, he began shooting.”

The shooting suspect has been described as a Black male, 5-feet, 5-inches tall, 180 pounds and was wearing a gas mask upon boarding.

“This person is dangerous,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said during the Tuesday briefing. “They are asking individuals to be very vigilant and alert.”

In cell phone videos posted to social media, it appeared that a gas canister may have been deployed in the midst of the shooting and officials confirmed that the suspect was in possession in a canister.

As of this writing, New York law enforcement officials have not established a motive for the shooting and are searching for a U-Haul truck they believe may have been connected to the incident.

President Joe Biden addressed the shooting Tuesday afternoon, saying the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI are working with New York law enforcement on the investigation.

“Jill and I are praying for those that are injured and all those touched by that trauma,” Biden said. “We’re grateful for all the first responders who jumped into action, including civilians.”
