Why Is This Man Laughing?

Soon to be comfortably retired,  L.A. school superintendent David Brewer appears in a jovial mood here. And who wouldn't be — the former admiral is collecting a cool half million dollars New Year's Eve from the city-funded ATM known as the Los Angeles Unified School District, for treading water since he was hired two years ago. Last week the LAUSD board voted to buy out the remainder of his four-year contract.

He's not laughing at us, but he's not laughing with us, either. He's just laughing — all the way to the bank.
