LAUSD announced Monday that it will opt for online classes when the school year begins this August 18. LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner cited the COVID-19 positivity rate in Los Angeles ultimately impacted the school district’s decision to not go forward with in-facility classes.

“While the new school year will begin in August 18, it will not begin with students at school facilities,” Beutner said. “The health and safety of all in the school community is not something we can compromise.”

Beutner tweeted the online guidelines the district will use and included an expectation that schedules will not change, after-school tutoring will still be available and preparation for students and instructors will occur.

Beutner added that the March closure of L.A. schools kept students from being infected with the virus and “proved to be the right call.”

“Science was our guide and will continue to be,” Beutner said.
