The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will not cancel classes, but is being cautious after a national TikTok threat involving gun violence.

While the original post can no longer be found, several users of the TikTok app reference the “Shoot up your school challenge” that was allegedly pinned toward December 17.

The social media app said it cannot find evidence that the “trend” started on TikTok, but they are working with law enforcement.

“We handle even rumored threats with utmost seriousness,” TikTok said in a statement. “Which is why we’re working with law enforcement to look into warnings about potential violence at schools even though we have not found evidence of such threats originating or spreading via TikTok.”

LAUSD was made aware of the TikTok posts and while they do not believe any schools are in danger, they are working with Los Angeles School Police and federal law enforcement to make sire any credible threats to any of its schools are “investigated and handled appropriately. ”

LAUSD said in a statement:

“The safety and well-being of our students and employees is of utmost importance. In recent days we have become aware of various threats of violence toward our schools. While there is no reason to believe our schools are in any danger, please know we take all such threats very seriously and take any action necessary to ensure the continued safety of our school communities. Our school administrators work with school site staff, Los Angeles School Police and local and federal law enforcement officials – where warranted to ensure that all threats are fully investigated and handled appropriately.

Please take time to talk to your child about the appropriate use of social media, and to remind them that their actions and words have consequences. We are grateful to our families for partnering with us to keep a close watch on everything that happens in and around our schools. We also encourage employees, students and families to follow Los Angeles Unified’s message, ‘if you see something, say something.’ Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing everyone at school tomorrow!”
