A lawsuit has been filed against the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), alleging the district was negligent in hiring an elementary school teacher who sexually assaulted students from 1989 to 1991.

The woman, who is being identified as Jane Doe, alleged that former teacher at 96th Street Elementary school, Louis Moreno, sexually abused her while attending the school, according to CBSLA.

In 1991, Moreno was arrested and charged with 53 counts of felony child molestation involving 16 minor victim. In 1993, he pleaded guilty to 11 counts of sexual battery against minors under the age of 14.

The suit comes months after another woman alleged she was sexually abused by Moreno in first grade, as well, filing a suit back in January and claiming LAUSD created a “culture of hiding” sexual abuse of its students.

LAUSD said it has not been formally served with a lawsuit, but added that “safety and well-being of our students remains our top priority.”
