Thursday

Cinefamily's monster John Cassavetes retrospective ends on Friday with a party, an encore screening of A Woman Under the Influence, a presentation from archivist Ross Lipman on Cassavetes' collaboration with Charles Mingus, and much more. But tonight's penultimate program of Opening Night and Love Streams is just as can't-miss: the latter, Cassavetes' final film as an actor and auteur, is a hell of a swan song (Dream sequences! A musical number! One-sided passion at its most devastatingly depressing!) — and it's not available on DVD in the United States.

Friday

LACMA's La Semaine de la critique series concludes with two counterculture classics: Barbet Schroeder's More, and Trash, starring Joe Dallesandro and Holly Woodlawn.

The Echo Park Film Center wins the unofficial competition for Best Event Title of the Week, with We Hate Everything Including This Film Series, an evening of films, footage and rarities “showcasing a punk rock past that was never supposed to last.”

Saturday

The wonders of the UCLA Film & Television Archive's Festival of Preservation never cease: Tonight they're showing Native Land, Leo Hurwitz and Paul Strand's terribly timely American labor movement “docudrama,” with narration and songs by Paul Robeson.

Sunday

Abbas Kiarostami's Certified Copy continues at Laemmle's Playhouse and Town Center theaters. See it before the weekend is through, or risk kicking yourself come December when it sweeps our Critics' Poll.
