Before founding his company, Eric Fernwood managed an international sales team in New York City. During this time, he began investing in real estate to create additional income streams. His experience with supposedly “investor-friendly” realtors, who provided minimal information and guidance, revealed the frustrating state of real estate investment. This realization sparked his vision to create a business that did things better.
“I decided to exit the corporate world and create a business that would provide sufficient income while helping others,” Fernwood stated. “I started by reading all the popular investment books—to my surprise, I discovered a sea of self-professed gurus touting their opinions as facts… Frustrated, I turned to the commercial real estate world.”
Data and Processes Before Guesswork
By carefully reverse-engineering the processes used by national retailers, Fernwood discovered that these market leaders used data and processes, not guesswork, to select profitable ventures. Together with his business partner, Cleo Li, he established the FERNWOOD Team, a one-stop solution helping investors acquire, renovate, and manage properties with minimal effort. To date, the company has delivered over 560 properties and boasts near-zero evictions with a 10% average annual appreciation.
“There are no shortcuts or secrets in real estate investing. Within two hours, we can take someone from zero experience to being more knowledgeable than most published investing ‘experts,'” Fernwood said.
