The Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) sent a letter to the NBA, asking that Jaxson Hayes of the New Orleans Pelicans be disciplined after a July 27 altercation in Los Angeles.

Hayes, 21, was arrested and booked for resisting arrest after officers were responded to a call of domestic disturbance at the home of Hayes’ girlfriend.

The LAPPL said Hayes escalated and caused bodily injury to one of its officers. Police eventually took the player into custody at 3 a.m., where he posted bail for $25,000.

The police union said it reviewed officer body camera footage and felt Hayes was “out of line,” and in the letter asked NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Pelicans governor Gayle Benson to take “corrective action.”

“Mr. Silver, the actions of your player were unlawful, completely unacceptable and are as clear a prima facie case of violating several of the National Basketball Association policies as we have seen,” the letter said. “We respectfully request that you immediately initiate a thorough investigation into Mr. Hayes’ actions before, during and after the incident and to take appropriate corrective action to hold Mr. Hayes accountable.”

LAPD is investigating the incident for possible excessive force, as camera phone footage obtained by TMZ showed officers using a taser on Hayes. Hayes claimed he the taser was used on his neck and he could not breathe.

The LAPPL also felt Hayes’ use of the “n-word” was in violation of the NBA’s code of conduct.

“Mr. Hayes’ actions were repugnant and in clear violation of the law, the National Basketball Association (NBA) code of conduct and warrant immediate action by the NBA to show that it takes reports of domestic abuse seriously,” the LAPPL concluded.
