Read the verdict here. Protest set for 5 p.m. near MacArthur Park

The LAPD is gearing up for reaction to its release of the results of its investigation into the controversial officer shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant last summer, which set off three nights of sometimes unruly protests in the Westlake district of L.A.

The release was set for sometime after noon today, with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said to be stepping up to the podium at the LAPD's administration building downtown.

But hours before that …

… the LAPD will set up media staging areas near the scene of the September 5 confrontation at West Sixth Street and Union Avenue, not far from the department's new Rampart station.

Now, whether they're expecting demonstrators or anticipating crowds as a result of news trucks lining up there is not clear. But the department issued a statement letting members of the media know where they can park and be and that they have rights to cover any demonstrations.

A group that had organized protests of the LAPD following the fatal shooting of Manuel Jamines, the Southern California Immigration Coalition, didn't seem to have plans, at least not any that were announced on its site.

Police said Jamines was drunk, armed with a knife, and threatening people, including a pregnant woman and the officers themselves, when they ultimately opened fire that warm afternoon.

The shooting set off outrage in the Central American community.

Update: The Coalition announced it will stage a “potential protest” and that ” … regardless of the report findings, the SCIC will call on the Office of the District Attorney to file criminal charges against [Officer Frank] Hernández for the murder of Manuel Jamínez … “
